'84 - '92 Rear Axle Swap
Parts needed:
IFS rear axle ('86 - '95) I had just reassembled my '84 pickup and started testing the articulation and shock lengths when I noticed that the rear tires were hitting the frame under compression . This was seriously limiting my rear wheel travel and I decided to do something about it. I still had my '92 extended cab sitting out back and I knew that the axle was 3" wider on the IFS trucks. I decided to try to swap the axles on the two trucks. I began my jacking up both trucks and supporting them safely with jack stands. The next step was to undo all of the associated hardware so that I could remove both axles. I began bolting the rear axle from the '92 onto the '84 and soon realized that the emergency brake cable would not work correctly because of the added axle width. I again went to the '92 and swiped the e-brake cable from the adjustment on back. I also had to use the U-bolt retainer plates from the '92. I completed this swap from start to finish in approximately 3 hours. |
