I purchased my latest 4WD, a 1998 Toyota 4Runner new at Tempe Toyota here in AZ. I owned it for four years before I started doing more than usual modifications to it. I tried to keep the mods as conservative as I could as the 3rd Gen. 4Runner is not a serious rock crawling machine. Following is what has occurred over the past year or so.

Clean and Shiny!

First mods, 1" (closer to 1 and 3/4") Performance Products springs, Bilstein shocks all around
and the BFG All-Terrain T/A's it had been wearing for the previous two years.

More Mods...

Next, replace the suspension with Sway-A-Way RaceRunner front coilovers, Downey rear springs, Air Lift air bags,
an ARB rear locker, Maniac Metal Works rock sliders, Goodyear 285 MTR's, the original prototype skid plate
and a custom front bumper modification courtesy of the first high level obstacle trail in my 4Runner (Raw Deal in AZ.)

and yet more mods...

The latest mods, a TJM T-17 front bumper and a Uniden CB.

Future Modifications

Not willing to leave well enough alone, I am embarking on a new series of mods to increase the capabilities of my 4Runner. Since I'm getting a little older and have a great deal of appreciation for how much money I've tied into my late model shiny truck, I'm going to focus on some more expedition style modifications. Next up on the list:

Building custom "low boy" mounts for a Con-Ferr cargo rack

Custom cargo area storage compartment

Multi-mount winch installation

In-dash GPS / Navigation

In-dash HAM or other long range communications

Additional Fuel and Water storage

Custom secure firearm storage
